Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz is considered to be one of the most important museums of modern and contemporary art in Austria. Officially established in May 2003, the museum is the successor of the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz (New Gallery of the City of Linz), which was conceived as a loan museum building on the collection of Wolfgang Gurlitt (1888 – 1965) in 1946. The city of Linz constructed the Lentos’s current building according to plans by the architects Weber+Hofer, Zurich. At the moment, the museum’s collection consists of roughly 1,700 works of painting, sculpture, and object art and over 13,500 works on paper, including 1,300 photographs.
