Join us at e-flux for a talk by artist Yoshua Okón, organized on the occasion of the exhibition The Imperial Ghost in the Neoliberal Machine (Figuring the CIA) on view at e-flux from April 30 through June 8, 2019.
Chase Bank, Oracle Corporation, Chiquita Banana—Yoshua Okón points to these multinational corporations to investigate their covert relations with the CIA and relationship to US foreign and economic policies, which feed into infinite greed for the global market. Taking as a point of departure his sculpture and video installation currently on view at e-flux, Okón reflects on his projects and artistic research over the last two decades, and discusses how subjugated consumers under neoliberal capitalism salute a reloaded fascism, metaphorically inferring the past and the future.
Yoshua Okón (b.1970, Mexico City) is known for his near-sociological experiments executed for the camera, which blur the distinctions of staged situations, documentation, and improvisation. His practice explores communal and national boundaries, and questions the issues of labor, as well as authority and its legitimacy in a geo-political event.
Okón’s work has been shown internationally and his past exhibitions include Mexico City: an exhibition about the exchange rates between bodies and values, curated by Klaus Biesenbach, MoMA PS1, NY and Kunstwerke, Berlin, 2002; Adaptive Behavior curated by Trevor Smith, Dan Cameron, and Yukie Kamiya, New Museum, NY, 2004; Laughing in a Foreign Language, curated by Simon Critchley and Mami Kataoka, Hayward Gal- lery, London, 2008; Burning Down the House, the 10th Gwangju Biennale curated by Jessica Morgan, Gwangju, 2014, and What People Do For Money, Manifesta 11 curated by Christian Jankowski, Zurich, 2016. His work is in the permanent collection of Tate Modern, LACMA, Hammer Museum, Colección Jumex, and MUAC among others.
The Imperial Ghost in the Neoliberal Machine (Figuring the CIA) is curated by the Tokyo-based project space Asakusa, and features works by artists Minouk Lim, Yoshua Okón, and Ming Wong.
The exhibition will be open for the evening from 5–7pm.
