Nguyễn Trinh Thi, Landscape Series #1 (still), 2012.

Join us on e-flux Video & Film for an online screening of Nguyễn Trinh Thi's Landscape Series #1 (2012), on view from Sunday, September 13 through Saturday, September 26, 2020.

This film is composed of found photographs from newspaper reports that show people pointing into a seemingly empty landscape—something often found in Vietnamese newspapers as photographers usually arrive at the scene of an event only after it has taken place. Landscape Series #1 is an eerie yet humorous reminder that past events are always beyond our grasp.

Landscape Series #1 is presented here as one of four films in Part Three | Decolonizing the Landscape: From Invisible to Visible, the third of six programs in the online film and discussion series Ecology After Nature: Industries, Communities, and Environmental Memory programmed by Lukas Brasiskis for e-flux Video & Film.

Ecology After Nature runs from August 14 through November 8, 2020. The films in Part Three will screen for two weeks, and subsequent parts will follow bi-weekly, with new films screened every other Sunday.

Nguyễn Trinh Thi is a Vietnamese artist, filmmaker, and founder of the documentary video organization DocLab in Hanoi. In her films and installations Trinh Thi examines issues concerning society and history—especially the complex, traumatic history of her home country Vietnam and its after-effects in the present. Her work stands out for being historically informed and formally adventurous, and her use of photo-media shows a reflexive inquiry about the conventions they import into a given cultural milieu, suggesting an ethnographic anti-realism (or even surrealism).
