Sarah Magenheimer, Art and Theft (still), 2017.

Join us on e-flux Video & Film for an online screening of Sara Magenheimer’s Art and Theft (2017), on view from Tuesday, March 23 through Monday, April 5, 2021.

Art and Theft explores the bounds of narrative and the illusion of received wisdom in the seven minutes and twenty-two seconds it takes to rob a house. Here, images of medieval art, popular cinema, and “live” news reportage speak candidly to the constructedness of all storytelling traditions.

Art and Theft is presented here as one of four films in Part Four | Optics of Truth: Media and Alternative Facts, the fourth of five programs in the online series True Fake: Troubling the Real in Artists‘ Films programmed by Lukas Brasiskis for e-flux Video & Film.

True Fake: Troubling the Real in Artists‘ Films runs from February 9 through April 19, 2021. The films in each part will screen for two weeks. Subsequent parts will follow bi-weekly, with new films screened every other Tuesday.

Sara Magenheimer has widely exhibited, performed, and screened her work. Recent exhibitions include White Columns, Foxy Production, Document, Chapter NY, Interstate Projects, 247365, and Cleopatra’s. From 2004–10 Magenheimer performed in bands, touring extensively and releasing five records. She was the recipient of a 2014 Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant and a 2015 Artadia Grant, and winner of the Prix De Varti at the 2015 Ann Arbor Film Festival. Recent exhibitions include Art In General’s New Commission in Riga, Latvia and a solo exhibition at The Kitchen in New York.
