Join us on e-flux Video & Film for an online screening of Omer Fast’s 5000 Feet is the Best (2011), on view from Tuesday, April 6 through Monday, April 19, 2021.

5000 Feet is the Best is based on conversations with a U.S. Predator drone operator, that were recorded in a Las Vegas hotel. On-camera, the drone operator discussed the technical aspects of his job and his daily routine. Off-camera and off-the-record, he briefly described incidents in which the unmanned plane fired at both militants and civilians. The film repeatedly turns from documentary to reenactment and fiction, weaving together the drone operator’s account along with scenes depicting other crimes in and around Las Vegas.

5000 Feet is the Best is presented here as one of four films in Part Five | Faux Documentary and Complex Reality the last of five programs in the online series True Fake: Troubling the Real in Artists’  Films programmed by Lukas Brasiskis for e-flux Video & Film.

True Fake: Troubling the Real in Artists’ Films runs from February 9 through April 19, 2021. The films in each part will screen for two weeks with a repeat screening of films in all programs on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

Omer Fast was born in Jerusalem in 1972; he lives and works in Berlin. Much of his work delves into the psychology of contemporary trauma, often relying on the blurring of memory and the retelling of actual events through cinematic convention. His work moves beyond the formalities of storytelling, pushing through the reality and non-reality of his subject matter, and is ultimately about the status of the image as a tool to disseminate information, both real and manufactured. In his work as a filmmaker, Fast explores an unusual relationship between reality and fiction. He is interested in exploring the construction of narratives, in particular how stories change when told from different perspectives. Many of his recent works examine the shifting boundaries of modern conflict through the personal stories of those involved.
