Imprisoned since 1994, Kurdish poet İlhan Sami Çomak is one of Turkey’s longest-serving political prisoners. This documentary highlights his quest for justice and freedom, told through Çomak’s own poems.

Sender: İlhan Sami Çomak is one of twelve films picked by the programmers of the fifth edition of the New York Kurdish Film and Cultural Festival as part of a special feature on e-flux Video & Film, streaming for two weeks from October 7–21 and accompanied by a conversation between the festival’s founder Xeyal Qertel and e-flux’s Lukas Brasiskis. Çiğdem Mazlum Yıldız (b. 1983, Ankara) started working in Turkish Radio Television (TRT) as an assistant while still a student at Ankara University’s Department of Radio TV and Cinema. Yıldız has worked as a freelance filmmaker for feature films and documentaries, and as as a script writer for TRT’s educational films, as well as with esteemed filmmaker Barış Pirhasan including on the feature film Kurtuluş Son Durak. Her films include the short Scent of Time (2008), the documentaries Güneşe Açılan Eller (2009), Dema Bezar (2009), and Zamanın Manzarası (2010), and the feature film screenplay Yarını Hatırlıyorum (2012). She currently works on documentaries for Al Jazeera Turk as a director and producer.

Sertaç Yıldız received his bachelor’s degree from Ankara University’s Department of Radio TV and Cinema, and further education in script writing from the IFSAK short film workshops. He has worked as a freelance filmmaker for feature films and documentaries, and as a script writer on several educational films, documentaries, and television programs. In 2011, he directed the documentary İstanbul’a Bir Şarkı, and in 2012 completed his first feature film script, Yarını Hatırlıyorum. He currently works as a director and producer for Al Jazeera Turk.
