Symposium in connection with the exhibitions Warhol Wool Newman. Painting Real and Screening Real. Conner Lockhart Warhol
To round off the twin exhibitions Warhol Wool Newman. Painting Real and Screening Real. Conner Lockhart Warhol, the Kunsthaus Graz invites you to join distinguished American artists Sharon Lockhart and Christopher Wool in taking a look at the pioneering work of their predecessors. The key figure and reference point of this review is Andy Warhol, who revolutionised painting as a medium and also played an important part in the development of film. His artistic output in these two media reflects both Barnett Newman’s approach to the materiality of pictures and the use made of the apparent reality of media images such as is found in Bruce Conner.
The symposium will continue the concept of the exhibitions while pursuing the objective of formulating the subject matter more succinctly, checking out the background terrain and drawing new conclusions from the convergence of the five artists. It will offer a richly faceted exploration of the works shown at the Kunsthaus Graz and also re-examine the mutual cross-references between painting and film that were evident in the exhibition rooms. Similarities and contrasts in content and formal idiom in the five oeuvres will be looked at in a variety of different ways. These will range from art-historical analysis to consideration of the historical and political background.
