Nine Days of Green

Sonic Museion—Museum of Sound Art is pleased to present Nine Days of Green, a new biennial for sound art unfolding across Sorgenfri Torv, a suburban square north of Copenhagen. 

For nine days, the square, the former library, Greens Boghandel, empty shops, cafés, passages, basements, local trains, forests, and lakes become part of a temporary infrastructure for listening. Installations, performances, workshops, concerts, sound walks, listening scores, radio broadcasts, conversations, meals, and shared gatherings form a distributed sound library in public space. 

Nine Days of Green begins with a proposition: listening is a social, civic, and ecological practice. 

We are surrounded by sound, information, and communication, yet we increasingly struggle to listen collectively. What happens when listening becomes something we practise together? What forms of attention, care, and public life might emerge when a square is approached as a score, a library, or a shared instrument? 

The festival takes place in Sorgenfri, a suburban environment shaped by everyday rhythms, local histories, commerce, public transport, forests, and lakes. Rather than treating the suburb as a peripheral site, Nine Days of Green understands it as a place of possibility: a location where new forms of cultural infrastructure can be imagined and tested. 

The title refers simultaneously to Greens Boghandel, the historic independent bookstore at the centre of the project, to the commons as a shared public space, and to the condition of being green: unfinished, experimental, and open to transformation. It also acknowledges the legacy of Nine Evenings: Theatre and Engineering (1966), reimagined here as a contemporary laboratory for sound, listening, and public culture. 

During the festival, audiences are invited to participate in a series of assemblies organised around listening, gathering, action, and archive. Daily listening scores, workshops, sonic activations, and collective encounters accumulate into a living archive of experiences, recordings, conversations, and reflections generated by artists, participants, and local communities. 

The programme brings together more than thirty artists, musicians, researchers, and practitioners from Denmark and around the world, including AGF / Antye Greie-Ripatti, Lílian Campesato, Frank Ekeberg, HC Gilje, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, JO Kazuhiro, Christian Skjødt Hesselstrøm, Louise MacKenzie, Anna Nacher, Luz María Sánchez, Robertina Šebjanič, Maia Urstad, Jana Winderen, and many others. Installed throughout the square and surrounding spaces are newly commissioned and site-responsive works that transform Sorgenfri into a living sonic landscape. 

Alongside the exhibitions, visitors can experience concerts, DJ relays, workshops, sound walks, listening sessions, screenings, symposiums, radio broadcasts, and daily communal gatherings. Recurring formats include Radio Nine—Eight Dot Zero, a temporary radio station broadcasting throughout the festival; A Place to Lay Down and Listen, a space dedicated to sustained attention and collective listening; Sonic Soup, daily gatherings around food and conversation; and DJ Stafet, an ongoing relay of personal sound archives shared by artists and participants. 

Nine Days of Green is also the first public manifestation of Sonic Museion – Museum of Sound Art, an evolving initiative dedicated to sound art, listening practices, archives, research, and public engagement. The festival functions simultaneously as an exhibition, a gathering, a prototype, and a rehearsal for a future institution rooted in listening. 

What might happen if we treated listening as a public good? Nine Days of Green invites us to listen together and find out.
