The Royal Institute of Art (RIA) in Stockholm is a leading art institution of higher education located in Stockholm with a long artistic tradition dating back to the beginning of the 18th century. The education offers both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Fine Arts and postgraduate studies in Architecture.
The institution is diverse with programs and courses in traditional methods as well as instruction in the most innovative and the very latest techniques. The institute has about 230 students and leading Swedish and foreign artists and architects teach at the institute.
Programs in fine art and architecture
Five-Year program in Fine Arts (300 ECTS credits)
The course of study is flexible and, to a great extent, designed by the students themselves in dialogue with their supervising professor. Each student has a supervising professor who provides individualized as well as group instruction and guidance. The professor-led group involves presentations of one’s own and others work, collective discussions, as well as other artistically based activities. Note that the teaching language is both Swedish and English.
Exhibition making is an integral part of the education; all students participate in group exhibitions (year three and year five) and a solo show in the gallery of the Royal Institute of Art (year five). The gallery is also available for student-initiated projects during the summer.

Master Program in Fine Arts (120 ECTS credits)
The MFA program at the Royal Institute of Art (RIA) focuses on the development of an independent and reflexive artistic work capable of critically engaging in the production of art within an international context. Artists on the program gain decisiveness in their practice based on the broadest conditions available for experimentation, knowledge production and artistic research.
The course of study in the MFA program is flexible and, to a great extent, designed by the students themselves in dialogue with their supervising professor. Studies are arranged according to the individualized needs of the student’s own artistic practice. Each student has a supervising professor who provides individual as well as group instruction and guidance. The professor-led group involves presentations of one’s own and others work, collective discussions, as well as other artistically based activities.
The MFA program has an international orientation. Students are in continuous interaction with international faculty, guest teachers and lecturers throughout the course of their studies. International collaboration is highly valued at RIA and we encourage our students to participate in exchange programs abroad with our partner institutions.

Project studies for professional artists (60 ECTS credits)
The course is geared towards professional artists with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or equivalent, who will be provided with the opportunity to devote an academic year to an individually designed artistic project.
The project year provides an opportunity to carry out an independent artistic project in a self-chosen area. In addition to working with their own project, the aim of the course is to develop the skills necessary to address advanced artistic problems in a creative way. The artist will be challenged to explore their artistic process and formulate new sets of questions through their practice.

The Photographic Artist’s book: Dissemination in a digital landscape (60 ECTS credits)
This course is a one-year full-time postgraduate course, which will take place every second week during the period, primarily for professional practitioners in the fields of art and photography.
Through theory and practice, the course focuses on how to work with photographic material in relation to publications in a broad sense.
Based on aspects such as democracy, activism and history, the course examines various publication strategies.
For admission to the course an artistic bachelor’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in relevant subjects or equivalent is required.

Exchange and international residence
Students from schools that RIA has an exchange agreement with can apply for an exchange period ranging from 3 months to 1 year. Students coming from schools that don’t have an exchange agreement with RIA, or students who have recently graduated from a comparable institution, can apply to RIA as a visiting student.
Exchange and visiting students are provided with a studio space, a supervising professor and will be assigned to a professor group with a mixed group of students. They will have access to the college’s workshops and the elective course components within fine arts. Knowledge of Swedish is not necessary, but proper command of English is required to take full advantage of the studies.
