Punching Up, curated by Jon Lutz and Janine Polak, brings together visual artists working within various permutations of humor (irony, puns, deadpan, satire, etc.) in the service of critiquing those in power. Referring to a comedy-world golden rule of taking cultural hierarchies to task, the artists in Punching Up point out, examine, and combat issues of power. When done with intelligence and humanity, humor has a unique ability to dismantle the status quo, be subversive, raise consciousness, and address current issues. Racism, classism, gentrification, capitalism, elitism, and the art world itself are all subjects to be exposed and examined. Artists featured in the show work in a variety of mediums including printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture, video, and performance.

Artists included in the exhibition: Caroline Chandler, Desiree Des, Ryan Falkowitz, Rob Hult, Cary Leibowitz, Brendan Loper, Divya Mehra, Jayson Musson, Pope.L, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Alan Resnick, Buzz Slutzky, Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung, Katie Vida

This workshop seeks to look at the continuum of how ideas of gender are expressed from performance to objects and beyond. This workshop will present research and utilize work by artists who engage in or perform the problematics of identity. We will discuss work that represent notions of sex, class, race and gender while challenging ideas of privilege, as well as how artists investigate the term queer, not as an identity but as a space that challenges the normative. The workshop will include a discussion of artwork, as well as a creative writing/making space where students will work with some of the ideas we have explored throughout the workshop. RSVP to [email protected]. Space is limited.

Tuesday, March 7, 2:30–5:30pm
TEXTures in Blackness by Kameelah Rasheed x The Black School
Because blackness is not singular or static, participants will be challenged to explore the textures of blackness through printmaking. Participants will create prints through experimental printing techniques that make use of a variety of materials and processes to create highly textured final pieces that carefully integrate text mined from a wide range of writing by Black thinkers. RSVP to [email protected]. Space is limited.

Tuesday, March 21, 4:30pm
Divya Mehra: Visiting Artist Lecture
Visual Arts Building, Room 1016
Located in the Visual Arts Building, the gallery is open Monday through Friday from noon–5pm. Exhibitions and events in the gallery are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.
