Rhode Island School of Design is a global leader in art and design education with a distinguished history of excellence in teaching and a rigorous educational model that encourages creative experimentation and risk-taking. For summer 2017, RISD offers a series of seven creative and culturally immersive courses in seven diverse locations. RISD faculty lead each of the three-four week Global Summer Studies courses, which are open to all students, artists and designers of all disciplines and backgrounds.
Credits: RISD Global Summer Study courses offer three RISD transfer credits.

RISD in ROME: Maps and Stories
June 9–30, RISD site in Rome, Naples
Gabriel Feld, RISD Faculty in Architecture and Ezio Genovesi, Director of RISD European Honor Program in Rome, bring students to capture and expand the art, culture and life of Rome through the development of 2D, 3D and time-based maps and short narratives in both verbal and written form, fiction and non-fiction, toward a final production in visual, written, video, and/or web-based formats.
RISD in ROME: Sensing The City
July 9–30, RISD site in Rome, Venice Art Biennale
Paolo Cardini, RISD Faculty in Industrial Design and Diane Derr, VCUQ Faculty in New Media will invite students to create wearable interactive sculptures and devices able to respond to the multiple and multisensorial inputs provided by the cities of Rome and Venice: the crowd, the noise, the narrow streets, the light or any external element of inspiration.
South Korea: Housing Hybrids
June 27–July 18, Seoul
Rafael Luna, RISD Faculty in Interior Architecture will explore future housing conditions in a hyper-dense society. Set in Seoul, the studio will focus on studying urban inefficiencies in growing metropolises, which can be reused or adapted for housing typologies.
Iceland: Artistic Practice in 24-Hour Light
June 14–July 4, Reykjavik
Paul Soulellis, RISD Faculty in Graphic Design will lead a collaborative creative practice in a luminous landscape with 24-hour summer light and a vibrant artists’ community, as a backdrop for on-site experimental making, engaging with public, and performing publishing.
South Africa: Art, Science, Biodiversity
July 1–22, Cape Town, Stellenbosch and various game reserves and eco lodges
Lucy Spelman and Nicole Merola, RISD Faculty in Liberal Arts will brings artists and scientists to explore the central question on how arts, humanities, and sciences should be brought together in order to think about biodiversity, through the exploration of South African game reserve, eco lodges and urban environments.
Japan: Book Shaping and Visual Ideas
June 5–26, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima
Daniel Heyman, RISD Faculty in Printmaking will lead students to explore Japanese book arts and paper mounting techniques and realize books and paperworks that will then hold their visual ideas while exploring contemporary Japanese culture through visits to historically and contemporary sites in Japan.
Ireland: Illustrating Myths and Legends in the Burren
June 10–July 8, The Burren, Dublin, Galway, Aran Islands
Robert Brinkerhoff, RISD Faculty in Illustration will investigate the Irish myth and legend as fodder for illustrated work. Students will engage in studio practice inspired by the unique landscape of the Burren Mountains, the Irish countryside and wildlife, and the urban environment.
