Beautifully located on the banks of the Umeälven river in Umeå, a fast-growing university town with 37,000 students, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts is the northernmost of all five Swedish Art Academies. Within the evolving contemporary Arts Campus, and together with the School of Architecture, Institute of Design, HUMlab, Sliperiet and the museum of contemporary art Bildmuseet, the Academy is part of a new and creative focal point in the north.

Program
Umeå Academy of Fine Arts offers an English-taught, two-year Master program focused on artistic practice in a professional environment, with international connections through its faculty. Critical discourse on artistic practice, conditions of production and presentation and an emphasis on analysis and self-reflection contribute to an understanding of contemporary art located within a larger cultural, social, and political context. Guest artists, curators and other cultural thinkers from Sweden and abroad support the faculty in engaging students in contemporary creative initiatives worldwide.

The program comprises of supervised and individual projects, lectures, seminars, group tutorials and study trips (Venice Biennale, Berlin Biennale, Manifesta, Documenta, Frieze New York…). Well-equipped workshops for photo, video, sound, 3D printing as well as for wood, metal, plaster, bronze, printmaking etc., are open to all students.

Each MFA student is provided a single studio space within an international and English speaking environment.

Over the two-year curriculum, the MFA program includes many opportunities to discuss the student’s practice: group critiques and individual studio talks with international art critics, curators and artists are an integral part of the program.

At the end of the MFA-program, all students work towards a final group show presented at the internationally acclaimed Bildmuseet.
