How can design change the world?

The year that has just come to a close has been a challenging one and many of us have been questioning what we can do to make a difference. How can I be a force of positive change? How can design change the world? Seeking to answer these questions, Paris College of Art reached out to MakeSense and together we created a new Master’s degree: Design for Social Impact. By joining the MA in Design for Social Impact you will learn how to employ your design and analytical skills to contribute to the greater good.

Within the framework created by MakeSense and Paris College of Art you will acquire the methodology and skills needed to address real world social, environmental, and development challenges. In this program you will not only reflect on issues—you will act. Working in groups, you will be teamed up with a startup (in France, Mexico, Belgium, Senegal, or elsewhere in the world) to address concrete projects from start to finish. With workshop style courses, you will develop the essential soft skills to bring a project to fruition: critical thinking, team and event management, and leadership.

With the ultimate goal of the program being to prepare you for the international job market, one of the advantages of this Master’s degree is the diversity of the public you will come in contact with: your fellow students, the startups, social entrepreneurs, and faculty you will work with come from around the world, bringing their unique and varied perspectives to this community. After honing your skills in Paris, you will leave the program with an international network of colleagues and contacts.

The program is open to any applicant who has successfully completed an undergraduate degree (BFA, BA, etc.) with a studio component in design, or who has acquired basic technical skills through other educational or professional experiences. The inaugural class will begin in September 2017 with applications opening in January.
