Postgraduate research in the School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) is internationally renowned, interdisciplinary and publically engaged. Our research creates, embodies and responds to new developments in contemporary art and culture, whilst rearticulating processes and practices associated with established artistic media.

The School of Art is an intellectually vibrant and supportive research community wherein artistic practice is nurtured and valued. Collaboration, experimentation, impact and knowledge exchange are central to our intellectually ambitious vision for contemporary art. We lead scholarly inquiry into artistic practice and through artistic research in relation to the full range of academic disciplines and professional contexts available within one of the world’s leading research universities.

We invite applications for our generous University of Edinburgh and ECA PhD Scholarships as well as for AHRC Doctoral Scholarships provided by the Scottish Graduate School for the Arts & Humanities consortium (SGSAH). For 2017–18, the School of Art will prioritise PhD scholarship applications relating to our four new research clusters:
–Futurity/Society/Action
–Material/Technê/Materialisms
–Narrative/Trace/Physicality
–Temporality/Entropy/Being

These groups support new work by PhD students, early career and more established researchers, working together as communities of practice

Our PhD candidates are supported by bespoke supervisory arrangements made across The University of Edinburgh’s internationally renowned departments, learning and teaching centres, research centres and with our global partners.

The School of Art runs a visiting researcher programme. Recent masterclasses, workshops and tutorials have been led by Martin Creed, James Elkins, Brian Eno, Bob & Roberta Smith, Agata Pyzik, Cally Spooner and Stephen Sutcliffe. Our programme for 2017 includes Bisan Abu Eisheh, Melanie Gilligan, Martin Herbert, Lucy Soutter, Lisa Robertson, Hannah Sawtell, Corin Sworn and Cosey Fanni Tutti.

Through the SGSAH—the world’s first national graduate school for the arts—we have arranged cross-institutional supervision with our consortium partners. Our doctoral researchers have funded and organised innovative SGSAH doctoral training events across Scotland in collaboration with non-academic partners. Additionally, ECA offer generous project funding for postgraduate researchers to support events, training and travel undertaken as part of their research, as well as opportunities to undertake paid Teaching Fellowships and Graduate Teaching Assistant positions within the School of Art.
