The Art Practice program at SVA is a low-residency, interdisciplinary graduate program. A carefully selected, small group of candidates come together at SVA’s NYC campus for three successive, intensive summer residency periods. In the intervening fall and spring semesters, students engage in required, rich-media online coursework from all over the world. Participants combine personal narrative with critical theory to create works that comment on social issues.
Our world-renowned faculty includes Suzanne Anker, Dara Birnbaum, Kathy Brew, Lia Gangitano, Laura F. Gibellini, Johan Grimonprez, Thyrza Nichols Goodeve, Steven Henry Madoff, Ernesto Pujol, Tim Rollins, Stefan Saffer, Heather Schatz, Sarah G. Sharp, Jovana Stokic, Jacquelyn Strycker, Robin Winters and Carrie Mae Weems. Past guest lecturers and mentors include Alice Aycock, Luis Camnitzer, Lauren Cornell, Holland Cotter, Mark Dion, Teresita Fernández, Chrissie Iles, Sara Jiminez, Paddy Johnson, Alix Lambert, Tony Oursler, Tom Sachs, Lorna Simpson, Risë Wilson, Andrea Wolf and Ed Woodham.
Successful applicants will join a multidisciplinary assemblage of artists, curators, writers and thinkers. Participants and alumni from the program show at prestigious institutions and events, including MoMA PS1; Queens Museum; Corcoran Gallery of Art, D.C.; Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City; Tate Modern, London; The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art; Gl Hotegaard Museum, Denmark; The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik; The Moscow Museum of Modern Art; The Venice Biennale; and The New Museum’s Festival of Ideas.
MFA Art Practice aims to facilitate a global conversation about the arts. Artists in the program engage in research-based practices, and are encouraged to converse and collaborate across subject matters using a combination of traditional and non-traditional media, technologies and techniques. Ultimately, the program aims foster an atmosphere of risk-taking and experimentation, and to create a community of artists and culture producers who look beyond a consensus driven approach to how we define what’s important in contemporary art.
