The University of California at Davis is ranked tenth nationally among public universities. It is well known for its top-ranking research in sustainability, ecology, agriculture, and veterinary medicine, and is a comprehensive university with all of the major academic fields. As such, it offers very rich ground for interdisciplinary design research that crosses between disciplines and colleges. Its College of Letters and Science is home to the Department of Design, along with the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences.
The UCD Department of Design offers graduate students a unique opportunity to work with a dedicated faculty within one of the nation’s top public research universities and the only comprehensive design program within the University of California system. Restarted in 2009, our MFA graduate program has grown to 17 graduate students working across many fields of design, with 16 departmental ladder faculty and numerous other faculty outside of the department. Our graduate students have the option to focus on intensive studio activity in and across many design fields, sustainability and its relationship to the design practice, human- and socially-centered design, and take advantage of collaborative opportunities with over 100 departments and programs at UCD.
The goal of the MFA in Design is to provide advanced studies in design research. Studio faculty have expertise in print and screen-based design, information visualization, exhibitions, lighting, interior architecture, product, systems, and textile and fashion design. Other faculty specialize in the history and theory of design, paying close attention to interpreting design within its social, political and ideological contexts. Graduate studies allow you to take seminars and work with faculty across these areas of design while exploring your own particular studio-based research. Graduates will be prepared for careers in both academia and professional practice. We welcome applications from all, especially underrepresented populations. Our MFA is a two-year terminal degree program. Applications for fall 2017 admission are due on December 1, 2016, requiring both an application to the Office of Graduate Studies and portfolio.
