Focusing on the areas of non-profit management, art museum management, and, arts media and entertainment, the three-semester MA in Arts Management program provides students with an essential knowledge base and the tools needed to pursue successful careers in the arts. From finance and accounting, to legal foundations, strategy, and leadership for the creative industries, not only will you emerge from your Sotheby’s Institute Master’s with a specialist understanding of arts management, you’ll be ready to progress in your arts career—wherever it may take you. While many arts organizations operate on a not-for-profit basis, for-profit theater, film, television, visual art and music have equal importance as drivers of innovation and economic growth. This program has been designed with that duality in mind, spanning the spectrum from the visual and performing arts to museum management, media and entertainment in both sectors. Its goal is to produce administrators, executives and entrepreneurs who understand how to build and guide the next generation of creative leadership in the world of arts and entertainment.
The Arts Consulting Practicum is a highlight of the program—a capstone course in which top students have the opportunity to work as consultants for arts organizations, often in paid positions, and submit a report of their recommendations as a final project. Students have conducted projects for the Durfee Foundation, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles Stage Alliance and the Center for Cultural Innovation, among others.
