The Master of Arts (MA) program in Museum Administration at St. John’s University invites applications for the fall 2017 academic year.
This 36-credit program, offered by SJU’s NASAD-accredited Department of Art and Design, prepares students for a wide range of specialized professional positions in museums.
Thanks to our combination of academic study, first-hand experiential learning, visits from guest lecturers working in the field, and regular site visits, students gain expertise in the areas of curatorial practice, museum education, collections management, and museum-specific technology and communications.
“This program is designed to mirror the inner workings of museums, and to expose students not only to varied job opportunities in the field, but also to introduce them to the collaborative nature of museum work,” said program director and associate professor of art history Susan Rosenberg, PhD.
Requirements include: 27 credits of core courses; a one-semester (or optional two-semester) internship; and a capstone project that may include curating an exhibit for the University’s Dr. M. T. Geoffrey Yeh Art Gallery or completing a research project under the mentorship of our faculty.
To accommodate students from a wide range of academic backgrounds and strengthen their skills and flexibility as they enter the job market, we also offer interdisciplinary elective coursework in St. John’s Public History and Library and Information Science graduate programs.
We offer convenient evening classes on both the Queens and Manhattan campuses. We also take advantage of our location in and connection to New York City’s dynamic arts culture, as well as SJU’s international locations in Rome, Paris, and Seville, to offer exciting research, study, and internship opportunities abroad.
Competitive academic and administrative graduate assistantships are available; these positions offer qualified students tuition remission and a stipend. We strongly encourage you to apply early for these positions.
