Columbus College of Art & Design’s Beeler Gallery presents Roxy Paine: Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor.

Dioramas are often used to explain history at museums. But in this exhibition, opening October 13 and running through December 30, Roxy Paine has constructed five large-scale dioramas that explore the contemporary—from a security checkpoint to a fast food restaurant.

Coming up next in the Beeler Gallery Visiting Artists & Scholars Series:

Thursday, October 13
Roxy Paine
Sculptor and multimedia artist Roxy Paine gives a talk to mark the opening of his exhibition Roxy Paine: Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, several large-scale pieces that turn the tradition of the diorama on its head to explore contemporary ideas, from security checkpoints to fast-food restaurants.

Saturday, October 15
Charles Burns
Renowned and revered Black Hole and Big Baby cartoonist Charles Burns discusses his career and work in conjunction with the second annual Cartoon Crossroads Columbus festival. In addition to his work in comics, Burns has produced illustrations that have also appeared in magazines (RAW, Esquire, The New Yorker) and in advertising campaigns (Altoids).

Thursday, October 20
Chip Kidd
Graphic designer and writer Chip Kidd is a veteran book-cover designer for Penguin Random House. His work has appeared on the covers of books by hundreds of writers, including Michael Crichton, John Updike, Cormac McCarthy, David Sedaris, Neil Gaiman, Haruki Murakami and many others.

Wednesday, October 26
Lisa Oppenheim
Multimedia artist Lisa Oppenheim challenges the boundaries and definitions of photography with still and moving images that are frequently distilled through both primitive and technologically advanced means. Nature is a frequent subject, but she regularly mines the digital world for source material and then enlists technology in the creation of images.

Thursday, November 3
Paula Scher
Graphic designer Paula Scher’s signature is written all over the world of design. She’s the artist behind The Public Theater’s logo and dozens of its promotional and playbill materials, as well as branding campaigns for Citibank and Tiffany & Co.

Thursday, November 10
Fred Seibert
MTV’s iconic animated logo was commissioned by Fred Seibert, who joined the fledgling network in 1980 and became its first creative director. Seibert also played a key role in the “I Want My MTV” campaign, among the most recognizable and famous of the 20th century.

Thursday, November 17
Fred Wilson
Artist Fred Wilson has made a career out of questioning the version of history, and especially the black American and African experience, spun for us by cultural institutions, and compelling the viewers of his art to do the same. Using found objects and redirected pieces from museum collections, Wilson becomes the thought-provoking, conversation-starting curator.

Thursday, December 8
Spencer Finch
Spencer Finch uses light and color to capture the passage of time, whether in the course of an hour, a day or a year. His large-scale pieces have been installed at The High Line in New York, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, the Amazon campus in Seattle and other public locations.
