The NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore) is pleased to announce the fourth cycle (April 2017 through March 2018) of its Residencies Programme, hosting 22 artists and collectives from Asia, Europe, Australia, North and South America.
The Residencies Programme is a research-driven, studio-based residency for established and emerging artists dedicated to fostering the production and circulation of knowledge within and beyond contemporary art practices. The programme offers a concentrated period of time for research and fieldwork and serves as a platform for critical discourse, experimental practices, and artistic exchange in Southeast Asia. The programme engages a wide audience through a series of public events ranging from open studio sessions, lectures, screenings, and performances to special projects displayed in The Lab, the Centre’s space for curatorial experimentation.
The NTU CCA Singapore’s Residencies Programme is by nomination only. For the fourth cycle, over 100 artists were nominated by 83 international curators and critics and invited to present a research proposal. After a thorough evaluation of the submitted proposals, a Selection Committee composed of four Singapore-based curators identified the 22 artists who will be granted the residency. The selected artists include: Irwan Ahmett and Tita SALINA (Indonesia), Miguel Andrade Valdez (Peru), Song Ming Ang (Singapore), Martha Atienza (Philippines), Carlos Casas (Spain), Tyler Coburn (United States), Manon de Boer (Netherlands/Belgium), Oliver Husain (Canada), Monica Ursina Jäger, (Switzerland), Geraldine Kang (Singapore), Bui Cong Khanh (Vietnam), Lucy Davis (Singapore), Chia Wei Hsu (Taiwan), Jacqueline Hoang Nguyen (Canada/Sweden), Jamie North (Australia), škart (Serbia), Kartik Sood (India), Matthias Sohr (Germany), Richard Streitmatter-Tran (Vietnam), Min Thein Sung (Myanmar), Chi Too (Malaysia), Hu Yun (China).
Selected on the basis of relevance and specific potential to engage with significant issues, histories, and practices in both Singapore and the wider Southeast Asian context, the proposals reflect in their broad scope the artists’ diverse geographical provenance and variety of research interests. With different methodological approaches and critical attitudes, the artists-in-residence will investigate the complex and conflictual intersections of colonialism, global capitalism, national identity, and migration; the shifting relations between nature, landscape, and the built environment in the context of urban renewal; the poetical and political resonance of unofficial histories, intimate narratives, cultural artefacts, and waning handicrafts.
All artists-in-residence are granted a studio and a monthly stipend. Of the seven studios, three studios are dedicated to artists from or based in Singapore, two studios are dedicated to artists from Asia and two studios are dedicated to artists from other parts of the world. The Residencies Programme fully funds travel costs and accommodation for foreign artists.
Located in the Gillman Barracks, NTU CCA Singapore is a national research centre of Nanyang Technological University and is supported by a grant from the Economic Development Board, Singapore. In its threefold constellation of exhibitions, residencies, and academic research, the Centre constitutes a unique environment for the production and dissemination of knowledge.
