The School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania is pleased to announce the appointment of Michelle Lopez to the standing faculty of the Department of Fine Arts. She is a widely exhibiting sculptor and installation artist and joins us from Yale University where she taught in the Department of Sculpture. Previously, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of California Berkeley where she led the sculpture division. Her work is complex, employing sculptural methods and procedures to express relationships of politics and power through the representation of visual phenomena. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Halyard, Atl, in Istanbul; Galerie Christophe Gaillard, Paris; Simon Preston Gallery, New York; and Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, Milan. Lopez joins a faculty of the Department of Fine Arts that includes Sharon Hayes, David Hartt, Nancy Davenport, Orkan Telhan, Jackie Tileston, Joshua Mosley, Ken Lum and Wael Shawky, the Keith L. and Katherine S. Sachs Endowed Visiting Professor. She received her MFA in painting and sculpture from The School of Visual Arts, New York and a BA cum laude in literature and art history from Barnard College, Columbia University, New York.
The Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Pennsylvania is focused on the professional development of visual artists. Through workshops, seminar courses, international residency opportunities, and interactions with curators, writers and artists, the program provides an open framework to foster independent methods of artistic research. In addition to seminars within the Fine Arts department, graduate students are encouraged to pursue the impressive selection of courses offered across the university.
