The University at Buffalo is seeking a Director for the UB Art Galleries, two world-class exhibition spaces located in Buffalo, NY that showcase work by contemporary artists along with its collection. Each gallery presents exhibitions throughout the year, providing students, faculty and the broader community easy access to thought-provoking art, visiting artists and stimulating educational programs. In addition, the UB Art Galleries provides professional training for graduate and undergraduate students through internships and curatorial opportunities, and support faculty and student research.
The Director supports academic excellence and the galleries’ mission through engagement with education and scholarship in the visual arts. The Director is responsible for providing leadership, vision, and guidance to the galleries employees, fostering teamwork, advancing the collections and exhibitions, and ensuring the galleries’ long-term financial health through sound management and fiscal direction. The Director serves as principal ambassador for the galleries and builds on existing relationships with local/regional, national, and international communities. The Director will have qualifications consistent with having an adjunct appointment in one of the University’s arts departments, and will teach a course on a regular basis.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
Developing and implementing a strategic plan that advances integration of the art galleries into the broader University, and aligns its goals and objectives with the academic aspirations of the University.
Managing resources, overseeing care and management of the collections.
Managing capital, revenues and operational expenditures, and implementing necessary procedures and controls.
Building and leading, in conjunction with College of Arts and Sciences’ Office of Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement, a robust ongoing Development Program that supports exhibitions, programs, special projects, and engaged individuals.
Overseeing personnel to ensure a cohesive team and a collaborative work environment that implements programs and exhibitions reflecting UB’s commitment to academic excellence.
Establishing relationships and collaboration with University leadership and colleagues, encourage and recruit interdisciplinary faculty and student participation with the galleries, including potential co-curatorial roles.
Collaborating with regional art organizations and community leadership to encourage and stimulate public engagement with the University and its galleries.
Developing criteria, plans and procedures to appropriately govern new acquisitions.
Advancing the galleries’ educational mission through research, scholarship, teaching, and supervision of Museum Internships, and Independent Studies.
