The VeerStichting is a Dutch non-profit organisation that was established in 1978 by students of Leiden University. The purpose of the organisation is to advance the exchange of ideas between excelling students and high-level professionals, such as policy-makers, businessmen, scholars, politicians and people from the creative sector.

Its student board annually organises a two-day symposium where 250 outstanding university students and 250 influential thinkers from mostly The Netherlands and Flanders are invited to discuss a topic  that affects society as a whole, as well as organisations and the individual.

Over the years, the symposium has gained a prestigious reputation, with speakers such as F.W. de Klerk, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Jimmy Nelson, The Rt. Hon. David Trimble and Mario Monti. During these two days, the participants get inspired by (international) speakers, interactive performances, workshops and other surprising activities. The result is the unique encounter between two different generations from where new, remarkable ideas arise.

This year, the 37th VeerStichting symposium “On Hope” invites Alfredo Jaar as its keynote speaker.

Alfredo Jaar is an artist, architect, and filmmaker known as of one of the most uncompromising, compelling, and innovative artists working today.

He will introduce his most recent projects realized around the world, including places such as Basel, London, Fukushima, Buenos Aires, Dallas, Helsinki, and other locations. He will also present a selection of his most iconic works like A Logo for America (1987) and The Skoghall Konsthall (2000).

Important individual exhibitions include The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Whitechapel, London; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Berlinische Galerie, Neue Gesellschaft fur bildende Kunst e.V. and Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin; and Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki.

The artist has realized more than 60 public interventions around the world. Over 50 monographic publications have been published about his work. He became a Guggenheim Fellow in 1985 and a MacArthur Fellow in 2000.
