Award: 1,000 USD; room and board at Caldera
The recipient of the 2016 CT+CR Fall Colloquium Fellowship will lead a three-hour seminar for the program’s students, faculty, and guests during the Fall Colloquium and Artist Residency, which will take place at the Caldera Arts Center in the high desert of Oregon, Tuesday, October 4–Friday, October 7, 2016. Applicants should submit a seminar proposal on a topic at the intersection of art, theory, and research (500–750 words), a curriculum vitae, and any relevant supporting materials in pdf format by Tuesday, August 10, to [email protected]. The award recipient will be notified by Tuesday, August 24, 2016, and announced on CT+CR’s webpage.
About the CT+CR colloquia and artist residencies
With the generous support of Marina Day and Paul Livadary and the Marshall and Margherite McComb Foundation, the MA in Critical Theory and Creative Research Program holds its Fall and Spring Colloquia and Artist Residencies each year at the Caldera Arts Center, located approximately three hours from Portland. Past guests of the program include writer Sina Najafi, Editor-in-Chief, Cabinet; artist Nina Katchadourian, Clinical Associate Professor, New York University, and former Viewing Program Curator at the Drawing Center; sculptor Geoffrey Mann, Programme Director of Glass at the Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh; artist Alison Saar; artist Betye Saar; media artist Tom Leeser, Director of the Center for Integrated Media at CalArts; Frankfurt-based film critic Heike Kuehn; and Korean artist Atta Kim.
About the MA in Critical Theory and Creative Research
The MA in Critical Theory and Creative Research (CT+CR), the first of its kind in the US, is an accelerated, 45-credit, seminar-based program (one year + summer intensive) that prepares students for opportunities at the intersection of art, theory, and research. Located in a major center of creative risk-taking and social experimentation, the program combines the study of critical theory as a mode of socio-political critique concerning human meaning and agency with creative research as a largely process-driven form of inquiry, forcing both theory and research in new directions within the context of a 21st century art school. Under the direction of Founding Co-Chairs Anne-Marie Oliver and Barry Sanders, the program is devoted to people and ideas and to a rethinking of the present and future of cultural production; of arts-based research and research-based arts; of curatorial practice, documentary, and the archive; and of social and political reconfiguration in relation to major sites of contemporary contestation.
