Headlands Center for the Arts announces a full season of public events led by current Artists in Residence, alumni artists, and cultural practitioners from across the Bay Area. Public events at Headlands offer audiences one-of-a-kind opportunities to form a deep and meaningful experience with artistic processes and place. Highlights from each corner of our programmatic array are listed below, with the full calendar of events available at headlands.org.

Opening:August 14, 3–5pm
Each season, select artists in residence build and present exhibitions in Project Space. Visitors are invited in Sunday—Thursday, noon–5pm to witness this process and engage with the space throughout each exhibition’s various stages of making. Summer Project Space exhibitions include the Vermont-based collaborative duo Life After Life (Paige K. Johnston & Karthik Pandian), and Mexico City-based artist Fritzia Irízar.

The Tournesol Award recognizes one Bay Area-based painter each year with a generous cash prize and a year-long studio residency. Elizabeth Bowler’s self-illuminated, sculptural paintings depict transient topographies of light and livingness. The Luggage Store hosts Bowler’s solo exhibition, Terraform, which culminates her 2015–16 Tournesol Award residency, and runs through August 6.

New Games Re:Play
Artist Robby Herbst’s (AIR ’15) New Games Re:Play is a full-day dedicated to the New Games Foundation and festivals of the 1970’s, whose first iteration took place in the Marin Headlands’ Gerbode Valley in 1973. New Games Re:Play begins with a conversation and archival screening led by Herbst, a break for lunch in the Mess Hall, and then a replaying of the original cooperative, collaborative, and fun games on the Fort Barry Parade Ground.

Shop Talk: Jedediah Caesar & Kate Costello with Dodie Bellamy
Shop Talks bring creative practitioners from disparate fields together for casual conversations about the conceptual overlaps, or contradictions, within their work, as well as the personal stakes or investments that are involved in their practices. This summer, Los Angeles based visual artists Jedediah Caesar & Kate Costello (AIRs ’16) speak with San Francisco novelist, essayist, and editor Dodie Bellamy.

Living Foods
Get a taste of Headlands Chef Damon Little’s kitchen, which always stocks sprouted breads, sauerkrauts, miso, and any number of pickled things. Little will serve a multi-course meal that uses many of these living foods as their base or accompaniment. Come hungry for a small dose of explanation by Little and guest Jessica Prentice (former Headlands Chef and now of Three Stone Hearth), a lot of eating, and an intimate look at one of Headlands’ most vital activities.
Fieldwork sessions: Collective experimentation and place-based making

Pattern Language: Reflecting Place in Fabric with Kenya Miles
Take inspiration from both the natural and human-made systems of the Marin Headlands in this pattern-making and natural dyeing project guided by fiber artist Kenya Miles, of Traveling Miles Studio. Drawing from traditional methods and local materials, Miles will instruct on how to design abstract patterns inspired by the surroundings, as well as how to print or paint directly onto fabric.

Open house
Open house provides a once-in-a-season opportunity to meet current artists, view works-in-progress, attend performances and readings, and enjoy a housemade lunch in the Mess Hall Café.
