The Queens Museum-Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artists was established to help emerging visual artists in New York City. Each year, three artists are selected to receive stipends of 20,000 USD each; the opportunity to develop and exhibit a project at Queens Museum; and professional development support from the Queens Museum Director of Exhibitions and other programming staff members, as well as through the museum’s Artist Services Program.
Three artists were selected by a three-person selection panel consisting of the Queens Museum’s Director of Exhibitions Hitomi Iwasaki; Michael Connor, Artistic Director at Rhizome, New York; and Lydia Yee, Chief Curator at Whitechapel Gallery, London.
Ronny Quevedo (b.1981, Guayaquil, Ecuador) Ronny Quevedo earned his MFA from Yale University and BFA from The Cooper Union. His work has been exhibited at The Drawing Center (New York); Sicardi Gallery (Houston); Casita Maria (New York); the Queens Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Carol Jazzar Gallery (Miami); El Museo del Barrio (New York); Saltworks Gallery (Atlanta); and The Bronx Museum of the Arts (New York). He has participated in residencies at Kala Art Institute, the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Project Row Houses (Houston), Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture (Maine), and Lower East Side Printshop (New York). He has been published in Artforum for his collaborative project with Harold Mendez, Specter Field.
Sable Elyse Smith (b.1986, Los Angeles, CA) is an interdisciplinary artist and writer. She has performed at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (New York), and the New Museum (New York), where she recently completed the (Temporary) Collection of Ideas Seminar: PERSONA. Her work has also been screened at MoMA PS1 (New York), and BRIC (New York), and published in Radical Teacher, Selfish, Studio Magazine and No Tofu Magazine. Smith has received awards from Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art, Art Matters, and is a 2016 Creative Capital Fellow. Smith received her BA in Studio Art & Filmmaking from Oglethorpe University and her MFA from Parsons the New School for Design, where she is currently part-time faculty.
Julia Weist (b.1984, New York, NY) Julia Weist holds a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art and a MLIS from Pratt Institute. She is the recipient of the 2016 Net Based Audience Prize from Haus Der Elektronischen Künste, Basel, and the 2015 Media Plan Award from the Outdoor Advertising Association of America. Weist is the author of several artist books, including the novel Sexy Librarian (2008) and most recently After, About, With (2015). Recent exhibitions include The Luminary (St. Louis, MO), Witte de With (Rotterdam), and a solo exhibition, Parbunkells, at 83 Pitt Street (New York).
