The Royal Institute of Art (RIA) is currently seeking a new Vice-Chancellor. The initial appointment will run for six years with the possibility of up to two extensions of up to three years each. The selected candidate for Vice-Chancellor is proposed by RIA and appointed by the government.
Key priorities for the future Vice-Chancellor will be to maintain the institution’s independence at the forefront of art and architecture education programmes, while retaining its existing workshop traditions and developing a culture of artistic research.
Job specification with the following background/experience
Candidates for this role must:
–be familiar with the broad range of contemporary artistic activities
–have documented experience working with senior leadership in the context of their professional activity
–have experience and good knowledge of art education and current artistic research
–meet the eligibility requirements for employment as a professor or senior lecturer
In addition, candidates should:
–demonstrate visionary leadership qualities
–inspire energy and commitment among students, faculty and administration
–be outgoing, communicative and express professional integrity
–be an important member of national and international professional networks
–have experience initiating new institutional partnerships
–be a present leader capable of creating forums for dialogue and driving the debate about art and architecture
It is strongly encouraged that candidates:
–be interested in cultural and educational politics
–have an understanding of the higher education environment
–be able to communicate fluently in Swedish and English, both in speech and in writing
–have an understanding of economics and skill in building financial partnerships

About the Royal Institute of Art
The Royal Institute of Art is an international context with a long artistic tradition dating back to the early 1700s. Today, RIA offers a five-year inclusive BFA-MFA Programme and a two-year Master Programme in Fine Arts; further development courses for artists; and one-year post-Master courses in Architecture.
RIA is an active institution with a continuous flow of guests, as well as exceptional workshops. International partnerships are central components of artistic education at all levels of the school. Altogether, RIA has about 60 employees and 230 students. Some 40 prominent and influential Swedish and foreign artists, theorists, and architects work at the institute as professors and teachers. In recent years, an artistic research program has also been developed and currently includes individual projects in artistic research, as well as PhD sponsorship.
About 59% of the employees at RIA are women working as professors, senior lecturers, and lecturers, as well as administrative staff. The institute has a tradition of democracy, and the organisation strives for equality, diversity, and a good working environment, as well as motivated co-workers.
The Royal Institute of Art has an annual budget of about 73 million SEK, of which 8.4 million SEK (2015) is research funding. The majority consists of government funding.
