Pioneer Works is pleased to announce the program for the second annual Summit on Pedagogy, which will take place April 15–17 at the Red Hook art center, 159 Pioneer St. The Summit is open to the public, though capacity is limited. Online pre-registration is advised.
Often considered the special realm of teachers, pedagogy is more broadly concerned with the relationship between personal development and our participation in society. It reaches across disciplines and context, fostering a generative space for social inquiry. Over the course of three days at Pioneer Works, a diverse roster of educators, artists and thinkers will share how unique pedagogical approaches have the ability to catalyze radical social change.
The Summit opens on Friday, April 15 at 7:30pm with a keynote lecture by award-winning poet and novelist Jesse Ball. On Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17, the Summit facilitates 12 hands-on workshops from 9:30am to 6pm, including:
–Lee Keylock from Narrative 4 shares classroom techniques on how to foster “radical empathy” and social change through storytelling
–Ellen Jorgensen from Genspace chronicles work to increase science literacy
–Ben Degen uses drawing as a process for visual thinking
–Roger Manix brings concepts of play and improvisation into the classroom
–Geleni Fontaine from Third Root discusses holistic healing tools for learning environments
–Eugenia Manwelyan from Eco Practicum demonstrates concepts of social choreography
–Taeyoon Choi from School for Poetic Computation describes inclusive learning
–Historian Jolene Rickard and artist Jackson Polys illustrate indigenous learning practices
–Training for Change share anti-racist facilitation tools
–GenSexNYC lead an immersion in the process of creating anti-oppressive, community-based sex education

About the Summit on Pedagogy
Pedagogy is often considered the special realm of teachers. At its core, though, pedagogy explores the connection between personal development and our participation in society. It is concerned not only with the exchange of information, but the conditions––mental, emotional, physical––that enable the exchange. As such, pedagogy can be a space for inquiry that reaches across disciplines and contexts, and ultimately, for imagining radical social change.
The two-day program offers hands-on workshops from a range of disciplines and invites participants to explore tools outside their areas of expertise. We will ask: Can practical tools become effective catalysts for change? Are such tools only local solutions, or can they offer viable answers for the dominant education systems? What are the values and belief systems that underlie the way we teach, interact and collaborate? How can we create more exchange between different learning modalities? The summit is organized by Catherine Despont, Co-Director of Education at Pioneer Works.
About Pioneer Works
Pioneer Works is a non-profit arts center for research and experimentation in contemporary culture. Through a broad range of exhibitions, performances, arts and science residencies, and educational programs, Pioneer Works seeks to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, foster community, and provide a space where alternative modes of thought are supported and activated in tangible ways. The organization was founded in 2012 by artist Dustin Yellin and is located in a 25,000-square-foot former manufacturing warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
