Parsons’ MFA in Fine Artsis a dynamic two-year, cross-disciplinary program committed to expanding the formal, intellectual and conceptual dimensions of emerging artists’ work. We foster studio-based research and scholarship that extends the boundaries of contemporary cultural expression, developed through a global understanding of the arts.
Housed within both Parsons School of Design and The New School University, the Fine Arts program is uniquely positioned within a progressive educational environment. Our international student body may access a wide spectrum of activities, ranging from rigorous formal and aesthetic investigations to cross-disciplinary collaborations with design, performing arts and humanities students, to public forums that address pressing social and political concerns. The Fine Arts program curriculum centers on one-on-one studio visits, group critiques, critical theory seminars, independent study, writing and research for studio practice, as well as professional practices seminars. Additionally, it offers medium-specific advanced practice courses and concept-driven transdisciplinary seminar electives focused on an evolving variety of topics, selected in consultation with our graduate students. Recent electives include: performance, installation, 3D, video, painting, photo/digital media practice, printmaking, art + politics, the body, the archive, walking as research, environmental art, art & feminism, art & science and art as social engagement.
Parsons Fine Arts is home to an active, international faculty who exhibit and publish worldwide, and whose work has been included in exhibitions and institutions such as the Whitney Biennial, Documenta, the Sydney Biennale and the Museum of Modern Art. An integral part of our academic curriculum is our Visiting Artist Lecture Series, which includes 10 public talks by critically renowned, multi-disciplinary artists per semester. Additionally, MFA Fine Arts students benefit from one-on-one studio visits with our Visiting Artists, as well as with 10 to 12 Visiting Critics/ Curators. This culture of dialogical exchange helps our students in their efforts to redefine the cutting edge of art in the 21st century.
In 2015,QS World University Rankings, a London-based higher education organization, named Parsons the number one College for Art and Design in the United States, and number two in the world.
