Introducing the 4th Annual MA in Critical Studies Symposium at the Maryland Institute College of Art
Reorientations: Alternative Attitudes Toward Space and Self
Keynote speaker: Manuel Cirauqui
We invite papers from graduate students and emerging scholars, writers, and artists working in visual culture, media, art history, performance, community art, or the wider humanities, that address issues of space, self, or the self in space. Reorientations: Alternative Attitudes Toward Space and Self is a symposium devoted to a consideration of the re-positioning of the body in our cultural past and present, with the aim of better understanding critical discourse in the arts and, more generally, the world around us. How have artists, writers, filmmakers, and architects, for example, employed alternative strategies toward space and self in order to create particular effects, or to achieve certain goals? And how, in the process, has their work contributed to or challenged notions of modernism, history, and humanity?
A series of 20-minute talks will be followed by a keynote lecture by the curator Manuel Cirauqui.
