New temporary master’s programmes:

Reinventing Daily Life
Course director: Thomas Spijkerman
Tutors and guests: to be announced
Reinventing Daily Life examines the connections between art and daily life, between people and art, and between society and the artist. Students will embark upon a quest for a new balance between supply and demand; searching for pressing questions and issues that people are struggling with; and finding a connection between the autonomous power of their work and the community they produce their work for. Reinventing Daily Life will function as a laboratory where we find out ways to improve the quality of life, resulting in integrated fantasy and creativity. As the performing arts, such as theatre and music, have the ability to create exceptional connections between people, we will be reaching for these art forms in particular to find alternatives for what is common and regular, in order to eventually create a new status quo.

Master of Voice
Course director: Lisette Smits
Tutors and guests: Paul Elliman and others to be announced
Master of Voice is a temporary master’s programme examining the voice as a unique discipline. The focus is on the human voice, as a means to or an end in itself, within artistic practice. The course is intended for students who want to work with the/their voice; for those who want to explore the voice in its various social, cultural and technological appearances—from vocal speech to “the speech act” to singing. The Master of Voice includes a special orientation on gender and technology.

About Sandberg Instituut
As the postgraduate department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam, the Sandberg Instituut offers master’s programmes in Fine Arts (MFA), Interior Architecture (MIA), and Design (MDes). The institute was established in 1990 by former Rietveld director Simon den Hartog, and developed into a fully recognised educational institution with several master’s programmes by its first director, Jos Houweling. Jurgen Bey, director since 2010, has sought to find ways to align the institute with the dynamics of contemporary society. He introduced temporary, two-year programmes. Whereas the temporary programmes reflect on situations with a sense of urgency, the main departments aim to deepen the practices of artists, designers, and critics.
