Critical Issues in Contemporary Art Practice pairs public lectures by internationally renowned artists with a classroom experience for UW students. It consists of seven public artist lectures, activities at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, and readings of essays and fiction by artists, theorists, novelists and curators. The theme of this year’s series “We don’t need other worlds. We need mirrors.”* will use speculative forms of philosophy, science fiction, and feminism to situate art firmly within the common world we share, reflecting on current social, political, and philosophical conditions and possibilities rather than imaginative escapes.
*Stanisław Lem, Solaris (Kraków: Wydawnictwo Lieterackie, 2002), p. 85.
