“Don’t imagine there’s room for everyone in the museum. Perhaps for a few who are really interested in it. But there is room for everyone in other places. You can use art in all sorts of ways. Society needs you”
–Michelangelo Pistoletto
Open to: postgraduates in visual art, design, architecture and science. Joint applications from more than one individual are also considered. The programme is open to participants of all ages.
Starting: March 2016
Het Instituut-School, located in the heart of Amsterdam, offers a new, interdisciplinary, postgraduate, practice-based research programme that bridges the worlds of academia and practice. The six-month programme takes urban problems in the spatial and social realms as its point of departure. Basic competences of the programme are a critical approach, social engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Reality-based research
Together with Het Instituut-School, participants explore a case study of their choosing and develop their knowledge and skills in relation to real spatial and social questions. In the first half of the programme, they conduct research and develop a case study. In the second phase, they work towards the presentation of their plan/design/project. In each case, they determine how to translate the value of the autonomy of art and design into a practical, feasible proposal.
Supervision by experts
Participants are supervised and supported by an international team of experts who are members of an Advisory Circle. Among them are architects, social scientists, writers and artists, as well as technology experts, policy makers, developers and administrators. They offer advice and feedback whenever the work of participants requires it.
