With its monthly artists lecture series, MICA continues to be at the forefront of conversations in the fields of illustration, filmmaking, social design, activism, public art, sculpture, fashion, installation, painting, performance, and type design. Have a look at a sample from the packed roster of upcoming innovators and arts leaders visiting MICA and Baltimore in November, and stay tuned for more updates from MICA coming soon.

All events are free, non-ticketed, and open to the general public.

Charles Long

Charles Long’s sculptural works often engage with psychological, philosophical, political, and poetic concepts of the body, the mind, and nature. His work was included in the 1997 and 2008 Whitney Biennials and has been featured in over 40 solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries internationally.

Susanna Newbury is assistant professor of contemporary art history, theory & criticism at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her lecture “Speculations: Art, Real Estate, and the Image of Los Angeles” will examine the speculative roles played in charting the economic geography of contemporary art, particularly in downtown Los Angeles.

Pablo Helguera is an artist, curator, champion of socially engaged art, and director of adult and academic programs at the Museum of Modern Art. He has exhibited and performed at venues including the Museo de Arte Reina Sofia, the Havana Biennial, and SITE Santa Fe.

Maren Hassinger is director of MICA’s Rinehart School of Sculpture MFA. In 2015, The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art organized and presented the retrospective Maren Hassinger … Dreaming. Her work has also been featured in the exhibitions Now Dig This!: Art of Black Los Angeles 1960–1980, Material Girls: Contemporary Black Women Artists, and Radical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art. 

Bill Schmidtis director of MICA’s Post-Baccalaureate in Fine Arts Certificate. Schmidt’s abstract paintings and drawings have been exhibited at The Painting Center, Goya Contemporary, C. Grimaldis Gallery, Hillyer Art Space, Maryland Hall, and McDaniel College.

Michelle Kuo

Michelle Kuo is the editor-in-chief of Artforum. She also contributes to October and The Art Bulletin. She has written on subjects including Robert Rauschenberg, Fluxus, and Jeff Koons, and has lectured at institutions including the Centre Pompidou and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.

Kris Swanberg

Kris Swanberg will introduce and screen her third feature film, Unexpected, and answer questions following the film. Co-written with Megan Mercier, Unexpected focuses on two women who discover their unplanned pregnancies at the same time.

Byron Kim’s work has been featured in several exhibitions in museums and galleries including the Berkeley Art Museum, Samsung Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the Henry Art Gallery, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.

Founder of Baltimore’s own Radica Textiles, Sarah Templin will discuss why small businesses are worthwhile and creatively fulfilling. She will also explain how she combines digital and analog techniques to create whimsical, marketable, bold graphics and hand-drawn pattern designs on fabric.
