This fall, the MA Aesthetics and Politics Program at CalArts is delighted to welcome fall 2015 Theorist-in-Residence, art theorist Thierry de Duve. As Theorist-in-Residence, de Duve will give two public lectures.

Thierry de Duve is Distinguished Lecturer at Hunter College, New York, and was Kirk Varnedoe Visiting Professor at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University for the fall semester of 2013. His English publications include Pictorial Nominalism (1991), Kant after Duchamp (1996), Clement Greenberg Between the Lines (1996, 2010), Look—100 Years of Contemporary Art (2001), and Sewn In the Sweatshops of Marx: Beuys, Warhol, Klein, Duchamp (2012). In 2013–14, he published six essays in Artforum, which he will gather in a book tentatively titled Duchamp’s Telegram. He is presently finishing a book of essays on aesthetics, forthcoming from the University of Chicago Press.
We are also pleased to welcome Armen Avanessian as a Visiting Faculty for fall 2015.
Armen Avanessian studied philosophy and political science in Vienna and Paris. After completing his dissertation in literature, he worked at the Free University Berlin from 2007-2014. He has previously been a Visiting Fellow in the German Department at Columbia University and in the German Department at Yale University and visiting professor at various art academies in Vienna, Nuremberg and Basel. He is editor-in-chief at Merve Verlag Berlin. In 2012, he founded a bilingual research platform on Speculative Poetics, including a series of events, translations, and publications: www.spekulative-poetik.de.
The MA Aesthetics and Politics program encourages interrogations of the arts and politics in an expanded field. Students specialize in Critical Theory, Global Studies, or Media and Urban Studies and get up close and personal with key contemporary artists and thinkers.
