Each week, academic departments across MICA host a variety of local, national, and international visiting artists and critics who invigorate the community, connect MICA with cutting-edge discourse in art and design, and speak to the breadth and range of innovative practice and thinking happening right now at MICA.
These outstanding professionals give public talks, share meals with students and faculty, engage in give-and-take in small class meetings and seminars, and critique student work in the studios, in the campus galleries, and out in the neighborhoods surrounding MICA. Visitors at MICA are part of the fabric and culture of the educational experience. MICA offers constantly shifting perspectives from frequent and extraordinary guests. Clifford Owens

Clifford Owens is a performance artist, photographer, and writer who has presented histories of Black performance art and often involves audiences in his performances. He has exhibited at MoMA PS1, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.

This annual event at MICA returns with rapid-fire presentations by global and local design voices: Darhil Crooks, Ellen Lupton, Mary Mashburn, Mark Mulder, Rianne Petter, Jennifer Cole Phillips, and the graphic design studio Other Means. From the Netherlands, Mark Mulder researches, designs, and teaches to explore popular culture, diversity, and complex multiple identities. Rianne Petter’s book Poster N_ 524 is a valuable how-to manual that analyzes the creative space of a poster as a tool for visual communication. Darhil Crooks is creative director at The Atlantic, and Mary Mashburn, from Globe Press, will speak about how this local press housed at MICA is responding to the Baltimore Uprising. Type Nite will also launch MICA’s latest book from Princeton Architectural Press, Graphic Design: The New Basics, 2nd Edition, Revised and Expanded, by Ellen Lupton and Jennifer Cole Phillips, which features work by dozens of MICA students and faculty.

Raphael Rubinstein is the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting Critic-in-Residence for fall 2015 at MICA. He has published widely; he is a contributing editor for Art in America and has curated many important exhibitions, including Reinventing Abstraction: New York Painting in the 1980s.
Robert Storr

Robert Storr was senior curator at the Museum of Modern Art and director of the 2007 Venice Biennale. He writes frequently for Artforum, Parkett, and Frieze. In his work, he has focused on artists including Philip Guston, Franz West, Elizabeth Murray, Art Spiegelman, R. Crumb, and Gerhard Richter.

Britni West will introduce and screen her directorial debut, the new film Tired Moonlight, and answer questions following the film. Tired Moonlight adds a refreshing breath of Montana air to the landscape of contemporary American independent filmmaking, offering a portrait of a community made with artistry, technique, and a remarkable sense of inclusiveness. Previously, Britni West worked as the set decorator for Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter and assistant director for 7 Chinese Brothers.
Evelyn Hankins

Evelyn Hankins is a curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. She has recently worked with the artist Jennie C. Jones, who explores abstraction and Black avant-garde music. In 2015, in the Huffington Post, Hankins discussed women’s leadership in the arts, advocating: “We need more women as tastemakers.”
