The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan is now accepting applications for its two graduate programs—the new MDes in Integrative Design and the MFA in Art. Both offer specialized workspaces, generous merit-based financial support, and the advantages of a close-knit creative community with access to the human and facility resources only available at a large top-tier research university.

The new Stamps MDes in Integrative Design is a revolutionary project-based program that brings together a team of student designers from a range of backgrounds, with stakeholders and experts from across the University and the country to grapple with a “wicked problem.” We’re looking for practicing professionals who want to bring their skills into alignment with the best and most current practices in design. Now more than ever, design professionals are being asked to play a leading role in addressing unpredictable, fast-changing and ambiguous conditions in “non-design” settings, and the MDes provides graduate students with skills and experience in collaborative work processes, systems thinking, and reframing complex problems. The challenge of the incoming class of 2016 will be healthcare.

The Stamps MFA in Art is an open, highly customizable, cross-disciplinary program designed for those artists whose creative projects encompass studio-based investigations, as well as inquiry in fields of knowledge outside the traditional scope of art practice. Past graduates have engaged with fields as diverse as neuroscience, museum studies, immigration law, ecology, economics, and gender studies to inform and expand their creative work. The program fosters close faculty mentorship and provides a rich array of studio, technical, and digital resources. Students engage in a self-directed international project during the summer between their two years of study and Stamps support continues for students transitioning into professional practice with post-graduate funding for residencies, exhibitions, and project development.

More information on our graduate programs can be found here or by emailing.
