Frans Masereel Centre offers residencies and a working space to graphic designers, artists and critics who want to work with intaglio, relief printing, screenprint or lithography… or who want to investigate the relationship of graphic techniques with other visual arts. Besides workshops for intaglio, letterpress printing, lithography and screen printing, there is also a typography workshop (with wood and lead typesetting) and a digital studio with, next to the scanners and printers necessary to prepare various photographic processes, a high-definition, large-scale printer and a digital stencil machine, also a laser cutter and riso machine. The focus is on creation and experimentation in the workshop. Frans Masereel Centrewants to stimulate new graphic practices in contemporary arts.
Residency types
General residency
Four–six weeks
The artist or graphic designer realizes a print project that matches his or her personal oeuvre. No prior knowledge of the graphic medium is required. Our two workshop managers provide technical assistance when needed.
Research residency
Eight weeks
This residency is aimed at the research of the graphic medium. The wide range of printing techniques available at the centre provides the opportunity to study technical aspects, innovative processes and graphic visual elements. A profound knowledge of the medium is required.
Essay residency
Four weeks
Critics, artists and theoreticians can reside at the centre to write a critical text on a print-related topic. The essay can relate to one or several resident artists, to an exhibition on graphic media, or to research about the graphic medium.
General conditions
Costs: 155 EUR per week per artist. This includes the accommodation, the use of the professional print workshop, technical advice and the use of workshop materials. For some digital prints, papers and specific inks, you will be charged with a small fee.
We offer accommodation in a personal little house (with equipped kitchen, personal bathroom, etc) during your residency. There’s room for up to four people, so you are free to bring a partner, assistant, friend or family member. There is also a bike at your disposal.
Procedure
Apply through the online application form before the deadline on August 1. A professional jury makes the selection of residents before September 1. Shortly afterwards, you will be notified whether or not you have been selected. For more information on admission please read the application form on the website.
Frans Masereel Centre
Frans Masereel Centre (1972), part of the Flemish government, is a graphical laboratory in which the possibilities of graphical applications are being researched, widened and reformulated. Besides residencies, Frans Masereel Centre organizes print projects such as exhibitions and the annual Print Art Fair, and supports artist publications.
