art&education is pleased to introduce Yearbook, a platform for schools to present student work from MFA shows, open-studio presentations, and other annual student exhibitions. Yearbook‘s first edition showcases the Städelschule Frankfurt’s annual Rundgang held from February 12 to 15.

During this four-day period, students of internationally acclaimed faculty members such as Monika Baer, Ben van Berkel, Johan Bettum, Peter Fischli, Douglas Gordon, Judith Hopf, Michael Krebber, Tobias Rehberger, and Willem de Rooij opened their studios to the public. Works were shown at the two main campuses, in Dürerstrasse and Daimlerstrasse in Frankfurt; the Curatorial and Critical Studies program held a wide variety of lectures and interviews in the school’s lecture hall; video artists and filmmakers showed recent productions in the Deutsche Filmmuseum; and architecture students exhibited in their classrooms. With more than 13,000 visitors last year and over 190 students presenting their work, the Rundgang has become one of Frankfurt’s most prominent art events.

The Städelschule was founded in 1817 and is among the foremost art academies in the world, offering degrees in fine art, architecture, and curatorial studies. Its faculty—also including Daniel Birnbaum, Isabelle Graw, and Philippe Pirotte—attracts a unique student body, with over 70 percent of students coming from abroad. Guest professors, invited lecturers, and visiting tutors have supported and developed a diverse range of teaching formats. Visiting art faculty in 2014–15 include Mark von Schlegell and Hassan Khan, and visiting architecture faculty include Mirco Becker, Peter Trummer, and Christian Veddeler.

Since 1987, the exhibition program of Portikus Gallery has been an integral part of Städelschule, adding to the school’s teaching syllabus and international reputation. Portikus has developed into a leading center for contemporary art in Germany and beyond, with a rich history of more than 190 exhibitions to date.
