The MSc in Cultural Landscapes is a one-year Masters programme that examines the relationships between people and the landscapes they inhabit. Taught by staff working at the cutting edge of the field, the programme poses crucial ethical, theoretical and practical questions about the ways landscapes are used and managed in the contemporary world.
Studying at the heart of a UNESCO world-heritage site, students are involved in a series of practical, field-based projects in local, regional and internationally renowned rural and urban landscapes. Drawing on the expertise of a number of invited speakers and guest lecturers, they have the opportunity to tailor the programme to suit their own research interests by selecting from one of four available degree pathways.
The programme employs theories and approaches primarily from the field of visual and material culture studies in order to explore landscapes as cultural forms in their own right. Drawing on interdisciplinary methodologies from the arts and social sciences in particular, students examine how we experience and understand urban and rural contexts as they are mediated by images, digital culture, heritage, identities, embodiment, architecture and commodities.
The MSc Cultural Landscapes provides excellent preparation for pursuing PhD research. It also benefits those who would like to strengthen their skills in fields that relate to landscape studies, including site specific and public art practice, landscape architecture and heritage management.
