The School of Art’s research is internationally respected, interdisciplinary and publicly engaged. Our research embodies and critically reflects upon new registers of contemporary art, whilst re-articulating processes and practices associated with established artistic media.

We are committed to building an intellectually rigorous and supportive research environment where research produced by staff and research students—both individually and collectively—is disseminated nationally and internationally. Collaboration, experimentation and outward facing distributive actions are central to this; we understand our research to constitute cultural impact within and beyond the university.

ECA’s mission is to promote critical inquiry through scholarly research, learning, teaching and education in creative practice, we demonstrate this through our commitment to practice-based research. A particular feature of postgraduate research at the School of Art is our ability to arrange cross-, trans- or interdisciplinary supervision across departments and schools within the University of Edinburgh. Through the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities we can also arrange cross-institutional supervision with our partners in the consortium (which includes 16 higher educational institutions across Scotland). We offer internal project funding schemes for postgraduate researchers to support events, training and travel undertaken as part of their research, as well as opportunities to undertake teaching fellowships and graduate teaching assistant positions within the School of Art.

We have developed key relationships with professional organisations in Scotland and beyond, including Bookworks, CCA, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Jap Sam Books, AND?

Highlights of our visiting programme over the last two years have included master classes, specialist workshops, seminars and one-to-one tutorials with Carol Mavor, Duncan Campbell, James Elkins, Beatriz Colomina, Lynne Tillman, Susan Hiller, Patrick Keiller, John Smith, Benedict Drew, John Smith, Plastique Fantastique, Mark McGowan, Ciara Philips, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, and Bob and Roberta Smith.

Current areas of research include:
art, critical & experimental writing; art education; artist-run initiatives and DIY culture; art & anthropology; cultural landscapes; expanded painting; independent & self-publishing; psycho-acoustics and audiology; sculpture; sound; visual & material cultures.
