“Don’s writings were a parallel activity to his art, architecture, and design. His three-dimensional work is not subject to language and not made by it, but one can see how Don got to his ideas, how the work came from his specific understanding of the world. Just as the language cannot have the physical, visceral effect of the art, the art cannot tell you where it came from and why Vico matters. Don’s writings are disorganized, scattered, repetitive, and incomplete, and that is as it should be. They are his verbal sketchbook.”

Donald Judd Writings, the most comprehensive collection of writings by Donald Judd, is now available. Co-published by Judd Foundation and David Zwirner Books, this publication examines Judd’s robust writing practice over the course of four decades in which he composed pieces that challenged conventional artistic, critical, and political standards.
In more than 1,000 pages, this volume features seminal essays, such as “Specific Objects” (1964) and “Complaints I and II” (1969 and 1973), as well as essays previously published in limited editions, notably the path-breaking essay, “Some Aspects of Color and Red and Black in Particular” (1993), and the critical essay, “Una Stanza Per Panza” (1990). It also presents an extensive selection of unpublished writings, including three essays written while Judd was a student at Columbia University, letters, and his daily notes. These writings have been organized chronologically; among them are evaluations of many predecessors and peers, essays on his homes and studios at 101 Spring Street in New York and in Marfa, Texas, and the decision to establish his two foundations.
Donald Judd Writings is the second publication from Judd Foundation. In March 2016, the Foundation released a reprint edition of Donald Judd Complete Writings: 1959–1975. First published in 1975 by The Press of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, this publication remains the primary source for Judd’s early writing.
