A two-day symposium organized by nonsite.org and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, “Photography and Philosophy” will explore the topics originally initiated in Issue 11 of nonsite’s online journal. The themes covered—the autonomy of the photographic image, automatism, and time and meaning—will be expanded upon by leading artists, philosophers and art historians through a series of formal presentations paired with engaged responses, and two larger panel discussions with curatorial moderators. The focus over the two days will be on photographic imagery within LACMA’s Leonard and Marjorie Vernon Collection. The symposium will take place on Friday and Saturday, March 13 and 14, at LACMA and will be free and open to the public.

Featured participants include:
Arthur Ou, Walead Beshty, Viktoria Binschtok, Phil Chang, Todd Cronan, Thomas Demand, Josh Ellenbogen, Michael Fried, Farrah Karapetian, Walter Benn Michaels, Charles Palermo, Robert Pippin, Britt Salvesen, Kaja Silverman, A.L. Steiner, Anne Wagner, James Welling, Jennifer Wild, Marnin Young

The conference is sponsored by LACMA and by the Mellon Foundation and is organized by nonsite.org.
