Chicago’s Hyde Park Art Center is pleased to announce the artists who have been selected to participate in the 2015 Jackman Goldwasser Residency. Each year, the program provides a platform for international, national, and local artists to take creative risks within their practice and expand their professional networks while living and working in Chicago. Launched in 2012, the program facilitates relationships between visiting artists and the city’s wealth of resources to develop individual practices and enrich the context for art-making in Chicago.

This year’s program features a first-time collaboration between Hyde Park Art Center and Project Row Houses (PRH) in Houston, Texas, for a new initiative titled the 2:2:2 Exchange. The 2:2:2 Exchange will launch with Houston-based artist Rosine Kouamen‘s participation in the Jackman Goldwasser Residency in Chicago from February 1 to March 26, and will conclude with Chicago artist Maria Gaspar‘s residency at Project Row Houses in Houston from September 28 to November 20.
This collaboration exposes artists working with socially engaged, site-specific practices to new communities with the goal of expanding their work in the context of a city new to them. Similarly sized, Houston and Chicago provide dynamic urban spaces, rich for artistic engagement. Through this residency exchange, Project Row Houses and Hyde Park Art Center aim to provide an opportunity for artists to research localized ways of thinking and creating in a different city to enhance their practices at home.
Further residencies in 2015 include Mahmoud Khaled (May 21–July 3), based between Egypt and Norway, whose work combines photography and video with sculptural forms to explore the construction of male identity; Dublin-based Vagabond Reviews (Ailbhe Murphy and Ciaran Smyth, July 7–August 14), an interdisciplinary platform combining socially engaged art and research; and Jelena Juresa (September 22–November 12), based in Belgium, from Novi Sad, Serbia, who works with photography and video to engage with the representational limits of the photographic image.
Working alongside these visiting artists is Chicago-based Susan Giles who will be developing a solo exhibition (on view April 19–July 26) featuring large-scale sculptures based on the architecture of global skyscrapers, today’s most iconic built forms.
The Jackman Goldwasser Residency is named in honor of the program’s dynamic supporter Deone Jackman, whose insight, tenacity, and generosity made it possible for the Art Center to launch this program. For more information, please visit the residency website.
