Sotheby’s Institute of Art Master’s candidates present For Sale, Not For Sale, a work created for UNTITLED. Art Fair in Miami.

For Sale, Not For Sale consists of two cubic piles of posters, printed with the statements “For Sale” and “Not For Sale.” The posters are intended to be taken by fair-goers and circulated freely as a living piece of art. Through its presentation in a commercial art fair setting, For Sale, Not For Sale raises issues concerning the contemporary art market, such as speculative collecting environments, and the pressure put on artists to produce fashionable, saleable works.

The artist has chosen to limit the use of his name, insisting that every work of art should stand on its own merit. The artist questions audience engagement prior to knowledge of authorship, asking if name recognition over-determines reception.

The presentation of the artist’s posters is intended as a subtle intervention in the space of the Fair. The social efficacy of the work will be determined through individual participation. Social media will play a significant role as a reflection of the interactivity and response sought by the artist. We encourage social media postings relating to this project to include #FORSALENOTFORSALE, in order to observe individual engagement and social reaction to these statements.
