From 2009 to 2014, the Institut für Raumexperimente (Institute for Spatial Experiments), under the direction of Olafur Eliasson and co-directors Eric Ellingsen and Christina Werner, and in affiliation with the Berlin University of the Arts, served as an internationally recognised project for arts education and research.

“Over the past five years, around 400 participants, grantees, and guests have taken part in experiments and workshops. Together, we undertook steps to turn thinking into doing and, in the process, actively reshaped the world in which we live. This experienced strengthened my conviction that art is first and foremost about reality production. Art does not merely exist in reality, it produces reality,” remarks Olafur Eliasson on the work of the Institut für Raumexperimente.

To mark the conclusion of this era, the Festival of Future Nows takes place at the Neue Nationalgalerie from October 30 to November 1, bringing together works by former participants and grantees, associated artists, and guest lecturers. The festival’s programme of performances, sculptures, talks, and installations—all to be held within the exhibition David Chipperfield – Sticks and Stones and in the areas surrounding the museum—offers visitors myriad opportunities for both reflection and active participation.
