California College of the Arts in San Francisco is pleased to announce the fall 2014 lineup of its Graduate Studies Lecture Series. The series brings to campus outstanding, internationally renowned speakers to present their work and their unique and diverse perspectives from the studio and beyond.
Titled “Sound & Vision,” the 2014–15 Graduate Studies lecture series examines the rich landscape of contemporary music and sound art. Through performance, audio lectures, and discussions involving an international roster of some of today’s most compelling and innovative practitioners, aspects of interest and importance to music makers, writers, and consumers will be aired and examined.
All lectures take place at 7pm in Timken Lecture Hall on CCA’s San Francisco campus (1111 Eighth Street, at 16th and Wisconsin).

Manuel Rocha Iturbide

The electro-acoustic composer and sound artist Manuel Rocha Iturbide presents his distinctive aural work, which explores sonic forms beyond the boundaries of instrumental music. Situating his practice within the context of Mexico City’s rich experimental music and arts scene, Rocha also traces the influence that the sociopolitical context of Latin America has had on its sound artists and musicians.
“Raw Nerves: A Lecture-Performance:” Tarek Elhaik

“Raw Nerves: A Lecture-Performance” by Tarek Elhaik focuses on the Mexican philosopher and film artist Manuel De Landa, and his cult punk and neo-Dada experimental cinema work. In De Landa’s films, philosophy is loudly and raucously pursued by cinematic means. His chaotic optical and sonic landscapes are characterized by distortions of the human voice, disruptions of the visual image, and absurdist montages.
Marina Rosenfeld and Christoph Cox

The composer and sound and visual artist Marina Rosenfeld, together with the philosopher Christoph Cox, who is completing a monograph about sound art, experimental music, and metaphysics, will present their recent projects as a prelude to a broader conversation about their respective interests in contemporary music making. Rosenfeld and Cox will structure their interaction through the use of a set of randomized keywords, including suggestions from the audience.
Geeta Dayal

Critical thinking about sound art requires a rich new terminology and open, multidisciplinary modes of thinking. Geeta Dayal, who has written extensively on music, culture, and technology for Slate, Wired, Frieze, Cabinet, Bookforum, The New York Times, The Wire, and Village Voice, will discuss questions such as: How do we develop an imaginative and specific language that supports analysis of the emerging practice of sound art? Can we approach sound on its own terms, without an over-reliance on the visual? What inspiration can we draw from the worlds of experimental music, art history, cultural studies, and fiction?

Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts (CCA) offers 22 undergraduate and 13 graduate programs in the areas of fine arts, architecture, design, and writing.
