The Pollock Gallery is pleased to present Jin-me Yoon: Extended Temporalities, an exhibition showcasing time-based works by the Vancouver-based artist. Part of an ongoing series of performative works for the video camera that document the artist as she executes lateral explorations through sites that are charged with historical significance, the works illuminate how Yoon’s physical actions invoke submerged histories of trauma, forge a relationship between past and present and employ the body in the creation of ephemeral acts of commemoration.
A recent recipient of a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, Jin-me Yoon is a vital member of the Vancouver art community. For the past two decades her works have contributed to ongoing discussions of place and identity on national and international levels. Yoon’s more recent video work explores the interrelationship between bodies, cities and history in an accelerated globalized era. The artist’s work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and festivals including the Vancouver Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Canada, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Jack Shainman Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, the Queens Museum of Art, MOCA Shijiazhuang, Seoul Museum of Art and the Houston Center for Photography. A faculty member at Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts, Yoon holds a B.A. from the University of British Columbia, a B.F.A. from the Emily Carr College of Art and Design and an M.F.A. from Concordia University. The artist is represented by Catriona Jeffries Gallery.

Sally Frater is an independent curator and writer. She holds a B.A. in studio art from the University of Guelph and an M.A. in contemporary art from The University of Manchester and Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Frater has curated exhibitions for the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Georgia Scherman Projects, The Print Studio, Art Gallery of Peterborough, A Space Gallery and the McMaster Museum of Art. Her writing has appeared in publications for the Studio Museum in Harlem, The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Art21, Artforum online, NKA, Prefix Photo, Border Crossings, FUSE, X-TRA and Canadian Art. A former Critical Studies Fellow in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Core Program and artist-in-residence at Project Row Houses, she is currently a member of IKT (International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art) and ICI (Independent Curators International).
The Pollock Curatorial Fellowship provides recent graduates in the field of curatorial studies with important professional experience. Fellows will manage all elements of exhibitions in the Pollock Gallery and curate two to three exhibitions during the year. Sally Frater is the first of three proposed curatorial fellows, selected annually.
The Pollock Gallery plays a significant role in an active academic ecology, extending the experiences of the studio classroom with thoughtful and creative considerations of present and past art forms. It is a vehicle to study a wide array of art practices, providing the Division of Art with an arena for experimental considerations of the space where curatorial and studio practice meet.
