Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present the ninth season of the Urban Field Speakers Series. Co-programmed by Janine Marchessault and Scott McLeod and presented by Prefix ICA in association with the Visible City Project and Archive of York University, this international lecture series brings together an array of global and local participants, including artists, architects, curators, designers and scholars, who offer unique perspectives on the role of art in transforming the experience of the city. Moderated by a host of local luminaries, past series have featured presentations by such erudite speakers as Coco Fusco, Chantal Mouffe, Saskia Sassen, Nato Thompson and Krzysztof Wodiczko, among many others.

The upcoming season includes the following events:

M. Christine Boyer
Alison Bain, moderator
The urban historian and William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor at the School of Architecture, Princeton University, takes stock of what we have learned from New Orleans post-Katrina, including a consideration of the photography of urban debris and ruinous effects. Moderated by Alison Bain, associate professor in the Department of Geography, York University.

Pablo Helguera
Victor R. Rivas, moderator
The artist, educator and director of adult and academic programmes at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, speaks about his artistic and pedagogical practices, reflecting upon issues of dialogue, interpretation, and the role of contemporary culture in a global reality. Moderated by Victor R. Rivas, sessional lecturer in Latin American Studies, University of Toronto. Presented by Prefix and Latin American-Canadian Art Projects (LACAP).

April 3, 7:30pm
Fulya Erdemci
Srimoyee Mitra, moderator
The writer, educator, and curator of the 13th Istanbul Biennial speaks about her numerous projects that navigate the complex terrain of art in the public domain, such as Istanbul Pedestrian Exhibitions, the first public-space exhibition in Turkey. Moderated by Srimoyee Mitra, curator of contemporary art at the Art Gallery of Windsor.

Gina Badger, moderator
The Spanish-born, Rotterdam-based artist speaks about processes of urban transformation and the potentialities of urban wastelands. Moderated by Gina Badger, artist, urban ecologist and editorial director of FuseMagazine.

Theaster Gates
Pamela Edmonds, moderator
The award-winning artist and director of the Arts and Public Life initiative, University of Chicago, speaks about his community projects that critically engage with the public, including Dorchester Projects, a vibrant cultural locus on Chicago’s South Side. Moderated by Pamela Edmonds, independent curator. Presented by Prefix and Third Space Art Projects.

Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art is a registered charitable organization that fosters the appreciation and understanding of contemporary photographic, media and digital arts through exhibitions, publications and related activities.

Series pass sales
Series passes are available for 42 CAD. Special series passes, discounted for students, seniors and Prefix Photo subscribers, are available for 28 CAD. And VIP series passes, including front-of-the-line privileges, guaranteed seating until 7:20pm, and a charitable receipt for 100 CAD for income-tax purposes, are available for 180 CAD. Quantities are limited.
