Exciting new initiatives for MFA students at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)

“It is an especially exciting time in the PAFA MFA program. To complement the extraordinary teaching that PAFA is known for, we are thrilled to have these new opportunities for our outstanding students to travel, exhibit their work and receive financial assistance.”

– Clint Jukkala, Chair of the Graduate Programs

New MFA Trustee Scholarship
PAFA will award a new full-tuition, merit-based Trustee Scholarship for Master of Fine Arts degree students. The inaugural Trustee Scholarship will be awarded in fall 2014.

New Murray Dessner Graduate Travel Prize
Additionally, in May 2014, a graduating MFA student will be selected during the 113th Annual Student Exhibition (ASE) to receive the first Murray Dessner Graduate Travel Prize. Recipients of the Murray Dessner Graduate Travel Prize will be awarded 5,000 USD for a travel fellowship after graduation.

This prize honors PAFA alumnus and long-time professor of painting Murray Dessner, whose career was profoundly influenced when he won both William Emlen Cresson and Scheidt Travel Prizes. Dessner used these prizes for travel which led him to the beautiful island of Patmos, Greece, where he returned almost every summer during his long and productive career.

New York exhibition to feature 2014 PAFA MFA alumni
PAFA is curating an upcoming show of recent MFA alumni at Mixed Greens Gallery in Chelsea, New York. The exhibition, to be held in July 2014 will feature work by select PAFA students from the 2014 graduating MFA class.

Annual PAFA Museum exhibition
PAFA continues to honor MFA alumni with the MFA Faculty Exhibition Award. This prestigious prize, awarded by the PAFA graduate faculty based on a student’s promise and vision, offers MFA alumni a one- or two-person exhibition in the contemporary galleries of the PAFA Museum one year after they graduate.

The works featured above are from the 2013 exhibition Who Say It Be: The Work of Sarah Peoples and Adam Lovitz.

MFA application deadline: January 15, 2014
